Redexim Top-Brush 6000 Helping Brocket Hall Golf Club Combat Worm Casts, Leaves & Dew
A significant challenge that fine-turf managers have faced the last year is worm casts, the muddy structures earthworms produce on soil. John Moorhouse, course manager of Brocket Hall Estate’s two 18-hole golf courses in Hertfordshire’s Welwyn Garden City, recently acquired a Redexim Top-Brush 6000 from Charterhouse to help combat the problem. Charterhouse is a Redexim subsidiary that has supplied groundskeepers with turf management equipment for 30-plus years.
“A Great, Clean Finish”
Moorhouse oversees the Palmerston and Melbourne courses, named after Prime Ministers Lord Palmerston and Lord Melbourne, both of whom lived in Brocket Hall Estate. Three months after acquiring the Top-Brush 6000, Moorhouse’s crew is using it for worm casts as well as leaf and moisture removal. “The combination of our heavy soil and milder, wetter autumns has seen a huge spike in the number of worm casts we’re seeing,” he says.
The poly brush-equipped Top Brush 6000 removes worm casts, organic matter, and dew from fairways and other large areas, and because the brushes can rotate either in or against the direction of travel, it can remove lateral growth and stand the plant upright. This results in enhanced airflow in the canopy and a higher-quality cut. “It has not only done exactly what we hoped in clearing surface casts, but it also played a major part in leaf clearance on the heavily tree-lined Palmerton course—using the brushes anti-clockwise to lift and move the leaves and other debris such as pine needles out of play and giving us a great, clean finish,” Moorhouse says.
