Newark Golf Club Addresses Compaction & Worm Cast Issues With Redexim Verti-Drain 7416 & Top-Brush 6000
Newark Golf Club was founded in 1901 as an inclusive member club. When the time came recently to search for turf equipment to address issues with worm casts on the course grounds, Course Manager Alex Clarricoates arranged a demonstration of the Redexim Top-Brush 6000. Post-demonstration, the course was not only the owner of that machine but also of a Redexim Verti-Drain 7416 aerator purchased on the spot to take on compaction-related tasks.
“With these two new tools at our disposal, we are in a fantastic place when it comes to course condition,” says Clarricoates. “It’s only upwards from here.”
Not To Be Trodden On
Worm casts around its fairways and surrounds during the autumn and winter led Clarricoates to requesting a demonstration of the Top-Brush 6000 after seeing the machine online. “As well as the obvious issues with playability, from an agronomic perspective, the increase in casts means that they often get trodden on and lay like that throughout the winter, resulting in us entering into the new season with bare patches,” Clarricoates says.
Local Charterhouse dealer F.G. Adamson & Son and Andy O’Neill, Redexim territory manager, showed Clarricoates firsthand what the brush could do. (Charterhouse is a Redexim subsidiary and turf management equipment supplier.) The pair also demoed a Verti-Drain 7416. The Top-Brush 6000 employs three hydraulically powered and independently adjustable brush units that can work to a maximum depth of 20 millimetres (0.8 inches) at a maximum speed of 15km/h (9.3 mph). The Verti-Drain 7416 can work golf courses, sport fields, and other fine turf areas, and has a 35-centimetre (14-in.) working depth and a 1.6-m (63-in.) working width.
In Use Daily
Charterhouse says the Top-Brush 6000’s adjustable working depth, 6-m width, and ability to rotate its brushes in or against the direction of travel provide the flexibility to perform light surface brushing or more aggressive, deeper surface agitation.
“This versatility means that throughout the spring and summer we’ll be using the Top-Brush for clearing dew and removing lateral growth, and during periods of drought it will be a key tool to deliver that extra little bit of surface presentation on the fairways without needing to cut,” Clarricoates says. “Come the autumn, we envisage the Top-Brush will be in use daily to clear any worm casts when they appear.”
