Toro Mowers & Irrigation System Help Royal St. George’s Golf Club Prep For Open Championship

Toro mowers and the combination of a Toro Lynx Central Control System and more than 1,000 sprinklers helped The Royal St. George’s Golf Club’s intrepid greenkeepers prepare the storied par 70 course for championship play for this past weekend’s 149th Open Championship, won by Collin Morikawa at -15. Toro initially inked a fleet deal with the club in Sandwich, Kent, in 2013; irrigation equipment installation followed in 2018, along with the acquisition of a fleet of Toro mowers.

    Take Control

To prepare the course for the latest Open Championship, club groundkeepers relied on Toro Reelmaster fairway, Groundsmaster rough, Greensmaster TriFlex Hybrid riding greens, and Greensmaster Flex walk-behind greens mowers. Course Manager Paul Larsen says the Toro Lynx Central Control System and sprinklers were also pivotal in helping maintain the course at a high level leading up to the tournament.

Toro says the Lynx system was designed to help greenkeepers address unique and ongoing issues by making all essential irrigation information available via a mobile device. The system provides granular irrigation control, to the extent that users can define and control an irrigation system by area and hole, prioritizing the irrigation of areas that need it most and conserving water in the bargain. Users can also see daily irrigation data, allowing them to spot stations that didn’t operate as intended, and can control irrigation according to runtime minutes or application centimetres.

    Creating Optimal Conditions

The 149th Open Championship was to occur at Royal St. George’s last year, but was canceled for the first time since World War II due to COVID-19. Founded in 1887 by Dr. William Laidlaw Purves, the club has now hosted 15 Open Championships, the most by any course outside of Scotland. The club first hosted the tournament in 1894, the first time that competition was held outside of Scotland.

“Royal St. George’s is considered one of the world’s best golf courses, and we are thrilled that they have chosen Toro equipment to create optimal playing conditions on their course,” says Toro Company Vice President Peter Moeller.
