John Deere Reel & Rotary Mowers Impress Dunblane New Golf Club
The Dunblane New Golf Club in Stirling has entered into its first John Deere fleet deal. The Club has acquired a number of new machines from local dealer Double A.
“We made the decision based on whether the kit was fit for purpose, our likes and dislikes, serviceability, and previous history with the suppliers,” says Course Manager Wes Saunders. “We chose John Deere, not just on price—although that was a prime consideration—but also on the key aspects of quality and reliability of the equipment and, most importantly, the strong relationship with the Double A dealership and their parts and service backup.”
E-Cut Hybrid Electric Reel Mowers
“All the machines were in place by the end of April this year, and everything’s working out a treat now,” Saunders says. Five of Dunblane’s new John Deere machines are greens mowers with a hybrid electric design. They include two 2750 E-Cut Hybrid triplex riding mowers and three 220 E-Cut Hybrid walk-behinds.
With their electric drive reels, the 2750E and 220E’s cutting units are mechanically independent of their traction units, allowing them to follow contours to a user-adjustable degree. A backlapping switch can reverse the rotation of the reel for resharpening.
The E-Cut Hybrids allow adjustment of the frequency of clip (FOC) with a rotary dial. In addition, the rotation of the electric reel adjusts to the mower’s travel speed to maintain a steady FOC count.
“We use the 2750E hybrid electric triplex mowers to cut the greens for most of the year, and the 220E walk-behinds for special tournaments when we need a little more refinement in the finish, then these are used on the greens throughout the winter,” says Saunders.
A-Model Rotary Mowers
The Club’s new John Deeres also include two 7700A PrecisionCut fairway mowers and 9009A and 7400A TerrainCut rotary mowers for the rough, trim, and surrounds. They feature TechControl, which lets management set passcode-protected settings for each mower so they deliver the same cutting performance regardless of their driver.
“The new A-Model mower technology is also proving particularly useful,” Saunders says. “Even though we’re still experimenting a little with its capabilities, the use of the programmable TechControl system to achieve the desired results consistently across the course is proving to be a game-changer.”
The A-Models’ AutoPedal feature links the throttle to an accelerator pedal, just like in an automobile. This reduces overall noise and fuel consumption compared to a “set it and forget it” throttle lever. Finally, the LoadMatch feature can slow the mower’s travel speed to cut thick or long grass more thoroughly.
The Dunblane New Golf Club also purchased a Tru-Turf RB70 greens roller and a Campey Turf Care Air2g2 air injection machine in the fleet deal.
First Deere Fleet Deal
“Overall I am very pleased with the performance of the new machines,” says Saunders. “We have quickly seen improvements to the course as well as labour savings with the extra control provided by the new mowers’ advanced technology features.”
The Club bought the new machines with a personalized John Deere Financial agreement that includes six-year PowerGard Protection plans to maintain and service the units. This provides the organization with a fixed machinery budget expense without the unpleasant surprise of extra costs.
With this first part of the replacement programme well underway, the Club is in discussions with John Deere dealer Double A about possibly including tractors and utility vehicles later on.
