SISIS Supaturfman Aerator Making A Difference For Maldon Bowling Club
Maldon Bowling Club Greenskeeper Mark Piper credits the purchase of a SISIS pedestrian (walk-behind) Supaturfman aerator for helping transform the green at the Essex club to its best condition ever. Essex Council had to cease its green maintenance efforts due to time constraints, and Piper now oversees a group of club volunteers. Piper says the purchase was a smart one.
“It was time for us to start caring for the green because it was suffering,” he says. “The green was suffering quite badly from moss. This was because it was receiving no aeration at all throughout the winter.”
A Huge Difference
Piper says the Supaturfman has made a huge difference in a short time. “It is extremely easy to use, and will be used throughout the season for aeration,” he says. “When I attach the slitter, not only is it quicker than tining, but it also provides aeration with the added benefit of keeping the Poa Annua down, which we normally get a lot of in spring.”
Piper is using the aerator a couple times monthly, alternating between using solid tines and the slitter every two weeks. Powered by a 6.5-horsepower (4.8-kilowatt) Honda GX160 engine, the Supaturfman has a 40-centimetre (16-inch) working width and 10-cm (4-in.) working depth. SISIS bills the machine as ideal for bowling, croquet, tennis, cricket, golf, and lawn surfaces, and says it’s handy for enhancing drainage and reducing turf compaction and thatch build-up.
A Truspred, Too
As the club’s season approaches, Piper plans to use the Supaturfman’s pencil tines monthly. He’ll use hollow tines in the autumn for coring if needed. The club also purchased a hand-operated SISIS Truspred spreader with 90-cm (36-in.) working width for autumn grass seeding and top-dressing tasks.
