Scotland’s Wishaw Golf Club Relies On SISIS Variseeder 1300 For Overseeding

To improve playing conditions at Scotland’s Wishaw Golf Club, head greenkeeper Simon Marshall was intent to introduce as much bent grass as possible into the 18-hole course designed by five-time Open Championship winner and golf course architect James Braid. Simon turned to SISIS and its Variseeder 1300, a compact, versatile, tractor-mounted seeder that the turf equipment manufacturer says is perfect for renovation and repair work.

“A No-Brainer”

Prior to the Variseeder 1300, Marshall tried a slit seeder, but it caused too much disruption to course grounds. That’s when Marshall called on SISIS and the Variseeder 1300, a low-maintenance seeder with variable seed rates operators can easily adjust using a Zero-Max gearbox.

“I spoke to a few other greenkeepers from other courses, and they all recommended the Variseeder; it just seemed a no-brainer,” says Marshall, who notes that versatility is the Variseeder’s best feature. “We overseed with it three times a year on the greens, overseed on the tees as much as we can, and the surrounds, too. I also like how you can use it with different types of seed. If you can buy one machine that can do multiple jobs, then it is a bonus in my opinion.”

A Multipurpose Seeder

SISIS says the Variseeder 1300 is well-suited for golf course maintenance and use on lawns and amenity areas, plus football, hockey, rugby, and cricket fields and for use by local authorities and contractors. The seeder includes a studded roller that creates thousands of small “plant pots” that receive seed rather than linear grooves as with slit seeders. SISIS offers 1,300-millimetre (51-inch) ultra-fine discharge (pure bent seed only) and standard discharge (rye grass and fescue) rollers as options.

“I like the fact that the Variseeder is light and very easy to use,” Marshall says. “We are quite a wet course in the winter, and our tees experience a lot of wear. Therefore, the lighter the machine the better, and the Variseeder is brilliant in that respect.”
