Herefordshire Golf Club Enlists Multitalented SISIS Flexibrush To Keep Fairways In Top Playing Shape

    Posted On: 12 October 2021

The Herefordshire Golf Club recently added a SISIS Flexibrush to its fleet of golf course maintenance equipment to combat worm casts on the fairways, remove dew, perform striping, and stand grass up prior to mowing. (Photo courtesy of SISIS.)

The tractor-mounted SISIS Flexibrush helps greenkeepers perform multiple tasks, including combatting unsightly and potentially problematic worm casts. At Herefordshire Golf Club, Head Greenkeeper Jeremy Browne is using a Flexibrush to handle that job and others to maintain the storied course’s fairways at a high level.

“Worm casts was the main issue. Obviously, they smear when you are cutting and can be a bit of a nuisance,” Browne says. “With less chemicals now available, we must look at going back to more effective natural ways, and the SISIS Flexibrush was the best solution because it can be used for multiple tasks.”

    The Better Product

Established in 1896, Herefordshire Golf Club is the oldest club in the county. Offering views of Shropshire Hills, Brecon Beacons, and the Malvern Hills, it’s also billed as the county’s most historic course, a claim that relates to its founder James Braid, a legendary course architect and five-time Open Championship winner. When Browne was seeking a machine to take on worm casts on the fairways, he whittled his choices to two machines.

“We thought that the SISIS Flexibrush would be the better product for us. With all the moving brushes, it seemed to follow the contours and the undulations on the course a lot better than the alternative,” says Browne, a 31-year course employee.

    Reliability Acquired

The Flexibrush is also adept at dew removal, standing up grass prior to mowing, and striping. The machine has a 5.35-metre (17.6-foot) working width, and consists of three sections equipped with angled floating brushes that follow ground contours. In addition to golf courses, it’s well-suited for football, hockey, and rugby pitches and for use by local authorities and contractors.

The Flexibrush has just a low minimum power requirement of just 18 horsepower (13.2-kilowatt), features hydraulically folding outer sections for convenient storage and transport, and comes with a stand for storing. During the winter months when Herefordshire Golf Club is unable to mow, greenkeepers use the machine for striping and presenting appealing fairways to golfers.

“The size and width of the machine are ideal,” Browne says. “We can cover larger areas, and it folds up so it can be stored nicely, and you can get through small gaps if needed. I wanted something reliable, and I have that in SISIS.”
