Victoria Park Creating World-Class Greens With SISIS Autoslit Pedestrian Slitter

When he recently set out to elevate the already top-notch greens at Victoria Park to world-class status, Head Greenkeeper Mike Finch immediately sought a SISIS Autoslit pedestrian deep slitter for the job. Victoria Park’s five greens annually host the Bowls England National Championship in August, and are also used for county, national, and international matches and competitions.

Cuts Like A Knife

Founded in 1932, SISIS sells aerators, scarifiers, sweepers, rollers, spreaders and top dressers, and other equipment. Besides the Autoslit, the firm manufactures tractor-mounted Megaslit, Maxslit, and Multislit models. Autoslit is powered by a Honda GX160 engine and is well-suited to caring for surfaces for bowls, football, hockey, rugby, croquet, tennis, golf, lawn, and more. It has a 900-millimetre (35.4-inch) working width and a 150-mm (6-in.) working depth thanks to heavy-duty tines for use in shallow soil and sharpened tines for fine turf and quality outfield turf.

“It is very easy to use, and I’m very impressed with what it can do,” says Finch. “We’ll use it monthly from December through to the end of March before the surface starts to dry again. It is like a knife with a serrated edge, and it basically slices into the turf, but it doesn’t do any damage because there is a rear roller on it as well. You get a nice linear aeration cut through your greens.”

Extend Your Roots

In addition to enhanced moisture drainage, the Autoslit is beneficial for root-extension purposes.

“In the colder months when the roots aren’t active, the SISIS Autoslit allows oxygen to reach those roots, and all the time you are doing this it will benefit the green when it comes to spring,” Finch says. “What you find is that when the weather starts to warm, the roots will start pushing down into all the nice linear folds you have been creating with the Autoslit.”
